Breanna Nix, a 25-year-old mom from Denton, Texas, stepped onto the American Idol stage to sing “Jesus, Take the Wheel” for her audition. This song is special because it was originally sung by Carrie Underwood, who is now one of the judges on the show. Carrie joined American Idol this season as a new judge, alongside Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, with Ryan Seacrest hosting as always. This Sunday night’s episode is extra exciting because it’s the 700th episode of the show!
Breanna told everyone she’s a stay-at-home mom. Carrie smiled and said, “Don’t say you’re just a stay-at-home mom. You have the most important job!” Carrie even held Breanna’s toddler son, Emerson, while watching her sing.
Before singing, Breanna shared her story in a video. She said, “Emerson was a surprise gift I didn’t know I needed. I used to weigh a lot—315 pounds—after he was born. When I looked at him in the hospital, I knew I had to change. I wanted to be the best mom for him, so I worked hard to lose weight. It helped me love myself more. I’m auditioning to show Emerson that he can chase his dreams too, just like I’m chasing mine.”
When Breanna sang “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” she did an amazing job. Carrie cried because it was so beautiful. But the video stopped there! To find out if Breanna gets a Golden Ticket to Hollywood, you’ll need to watch American Idol on Sunday at 8 p.m. on ABC. If you miss it, you can catch it the next day on Hulu. It’s going to be a big night!
