Jamal Roberts is still soaking in the reality of being crowned the winner of American Idol Season 23 — and he’s doing it all while juggling life as a proud father of three. In a recent interview with Us Weekly, the 27-year-old Mississippi native opened up about his whirlwind journey from small-town stay-at-home dad and schoolteacher to national sensation.
“It’s always been a dream,” he said. “Now it’s a reality.”
After his emotional win on May 18, where he triumphed over finalists John Foster and Breanna Nix, Roberts barely had time to celebrate before heading to Good Morning America in New York City. But he was quick to return home to Meridian, Mississippi, and back to dad mode with daughters Harmoni, Lyrik, and Gianna.
“All they say is, ‘Daddy win?’” he shared, laughing. “They just knew I was gone a long time, and that I won.”

One of Roberts’ standout moments from the finale was his duet with Jelly Roll, performing a mashup of “Liar” and TLC’s “Unpretty.” Calling Jelly Roll “authentic and real,” Roberts credited the genre-blending artist with encouraging the finalists to stay grounded and make music that feels good.
Another major influence came from Fantasia Barrino, American Idol Season 3 winner, who reminded Jamal to “stay true to yourself.” The advice clearly resonated, as Roberts remains committed to expressing who he is through music — and he’s hoping to collaborate with Fantasia one day.

Looking ahead, Roberts is eyeing a career in soul and gospel, genres close to his heart — but he’s keeping an open mind. “I still feel like I can do any genre,” he said. “I just don’t want to put myself in a box.”
As for the $250,000 prize, he joked he hasn’t seen it yet, saying, “Don’t know where it is. I’m interested in knowing.” But even when the check clears, there are no grand splurges planned: “I’m gonna put it in the bank.”
