Adam Lambert delivered one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards when he unexpectedly appeared during the ceremony’s tribute to George Michael.
The singer took the stage to lead a soulful performance of Michael’s 1990 classic “Freedom! ’90,” joining several other artists in a tribute that celebrated the late pop icon’s music and legacy.
Lambert’s appearance had not been announced before the ceremony, making his arrival an unexpected moment for viewers. Joined by artists including MEEK and MNEK, he belted out the song as several people in the audience rose to their feet.
The tribute took place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sept. 27, nearly a decade after Michael died on Christmas Day 2016 at age 53.
A Tribute Built Around Michael’s Biggest Hits
Lambert was part of a larger medley featuring several of Michael’s best-known songs.
Sombr opened the tribute with “Faith” and “Father Figure,” while RAYE performed “I Knew You Were Waiting for Me,” Michael’s Grammy-winning duet with Aretha Franklin. Teddy Swims then brought his powerful vocals to “Careless Whisper.”
The performances brought different musical styles to Michael’s catalog while keeping the focus on songs that helped define his career.
Sombr’s segment also carried a special connection to Michael’s history. According to Vogue, the 21-year-old singer wore a black Harley-Davidson jacket that Michael originally wore during his 1988 Faith Tour.
“It was pretty surreal, and an honor,” Sombr told the magazine about wearing the jacket, which had become closely associated with that era of Michael’s career.
Adam Lambert’s Appearance Added Another Layer
Lambert’s surprise appearance became particularly notable because of Michael’s longstanding significance to LGBTQ+ representation in pop music.
Michael, who died in 2016, was widely regarded as a pioneering figure in popular music through both his work with Wham! and his solo career. He won multiple VMAs during his career, including the Video Vanguard Award in 1989.
Beyond his music, Michael was also remembered as a prominent supporter of the LGBTQ+ community and as a philanthropist who used his platform to support efforts connected to HIV and AIDS.
Michael was outed as gay in 1998 following his arrest in Beverly Hills for engaging in a lewd act in a public toilet. He later addressed the incident through his music video for “Outside,” which mocked the police officers involved by depicting two uniformed officers kissing.
In a now-famous 1998 interview with CNN, Michael spoke openly about his sexuality and rejected the idea that he should feel ashamed.
“I’m a very proud man,” he said at the time. “I don’t feel any shame whatsoever.”
His openness and willingness to embrace his sexuality have since been credited with helping empower other LGBTQ+ performers in the music industry.
Fans Questioned the Original Lineup
Before the ceremony, the VMAs had announced that RAYE, Sombr and Teddy Swims would perform as part of the George Michael tribute. The announcement prompted discussion among some fans about the absence of openly LGBTQ+ performers from the lineup.
Michael’s importance as an LGBTQ+ icon led some viewers to question whether the tribute should include artists who shared a connection with that part of his legacy.
One Reddit user suggested that performers such as Sam Smith or Troye Sivan could have been included, writing that Michael’s status as an LGBTQ+ icon made their involvement seem fitting.
The discussion took another turn when Lambert appeared unexpectedly during the ceremony.
Before the VMAs, Lambert had posted a cryptic Instagram Story featuring Michael’s “Freedom ’90,” but his involvement in the tribute had not been officially announced.
His eventual appearance provided an unexpected final piece to a tribute that brought together RAYE, Sombr, Teddy Swims, MNEK, MEEK and Saint Harison to revisit the music of one of pop’s most influential performers.
