“You’re What This Show’s About”: 61-Year-Old The Voice Contestant Kyle Davis Stuns All Four Coaches

Kyle Davis had already enjoyed a music career decades before stepping onto The Voice stage. At 61, he returned to the spotlight with a performance of Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” that prompted all four coaches to turn their chairs.

The veteran singer took the stage during the third night of Blind Auditions, proving that pursuing a musical dream does not necessarily come with an age limit.

Before performing, Davis reflected on the significance of getting another opportunity to share his music.

“This is such an exciting opportunity to come at such a later point in the arch of my music career,” the 61-year-old said. “It’s never really too late. You always have to chase a dream.”

His performance quickly demonstrated why he had decided to give music another chance.

Davis delivered his distinctive interpretation of “In Your Eyes,” catching the attention of Kelly Clarkson, Riley Green, Adam Levine and Queen Latifah.

By the end of the performance, every coach had turned their chair.

Clarkson was particularly stunned by what she had just heard.

“What the hell have you been doing?” she asked Davis after his performance.

The question opened the door for Davis to explain that this was far from his first attempt at a career in music.

Years earlier, he had signed a record deal, released a couple of albums and spent considerable time touring. Eventually, however, he stepped away from music to focus on raising his children.

Davis later established a career in real estate.

But as his children grew older, they developed an interest in music themselves. Their passion ultimately encouraged their father to reconnect with the career he had once put on hold.

That decision led him to The Voice—and to one of the biggest reactions of his musical career.

Kelly Clarkson: “I swear to you I can win with you”

Clarkson wasted little time making her case for Davis.

“You are so good,” she told him. She then pointed to her experience on the show, saying, “I’ve won the show four times. I swear to you I can win with you.”

Adam Levine also praised the performance, emphasizing how much he had enjoyed listening to Davis.

“I was just enjoying it so much,” Levine said.

He added that he believed he could be a particularly good coach for Davis because they appeared to share similar musical tastes.

“There’s not enough of you out there,” Levine said, expressing his excitement at discovering the singer.

Riley Green calls it a standout performance

Riley Green also singled Davis out for the distinctive quality of his voice.

“That was the most unique thing that we’ve heard,” Green said, calling it a standout performance.

Green added that Davis’s voice reminded him of Dave Matthews—an observation that further emphasized how individual the singer’s sound was.

“Being brand new, you made me realize that the show being called The Voice is more about a voice that’s worthy of needing to be heard,” Green continued.

“I think you’re what the show’s about.”

Queen Latifah offered a much shorter assessment, but one that carried just as much weight.

“You deserve that four-chair turn,” she told Davis.

Davis chooses Team Kelly

With all four coaches competing for him, Davis had a difficult decision to make.

After considering his options, he ultimately chose to join Team Kelly.

Clarkson was thrilled with the decision and later explained why Davis had become one of her favorite contestants of the season.

“That’s probably my favorite person this season, because his vocal talent, it’s such a gift, such a style unto himself,” she said.

Clarkson also made no secret of her ambitions for the competition, adding: “I feel like it’s my turn to win this season of The Voice. I can taste a victory.”

For Davis, the four-chair turn represented more than simply a successful audition. After stepping away from music to raise his children and building a career in real estate, he had returned to the stage to pursue the dream he had never completely abandoned.

And at 61, he had all four coaches asking him to stay.
