Kelly Clarkson Compares 13-Year-Old Voice Contestant to Whitney Houston After a Performance That Leaves Coaches Speechless

Thirteen-year-old Brianna Cameron just gave The Voice coaches a performance they won’t soon forget. The youngest contestant in Season 30 stepped onto the stage during Cut Week with a Natalie Cole classic, but what happened after she finished singing was even more remarkable: Kelly Clarkson compared her to a young Whitney Houston, while Riley Green declared her the most naturally talented singer he had seen on the show.

For a teenager still at the beginning of her musical journey, those are extraordinary compliments. Brianna’s performance of “Inseparable” didn’t just demonstrate impressive vocal ability. It revealed a level of control, confidence, and musical finesse that even her own coach had not fully recognized before that moment.

Clarkson’s reaction was particularly striking. As soon as Brianna finished singing, the Grammy-winning superstar struggled to hide her amazement.

“It’s like we’re watching young Whitney Houston. You are insane,” Clarkson told her.

The comparison immediately raised the stakes of the moment. Whitney Houston remains one of the most celebrated vocalists in music history, remembered for her extraordinary range, powerful delivery, and unmistakable vocal runs. Comparing a 13-year-old contestant to someone of that stature is no small compliment, especially coming from a singer and performer as experienced as Clarkson.

But Brianna wasn’t finished collecting praise.

Queen Latifah was equally impressed by what she had witnessed. Rather than focusing solely on the teenager’s vocal ability, the coach highlighted how unusual it was to see someone so young perform with such composure.

“That was a beautiful performance of a beautiful song,” Latifah said. “This is when I thank God for being in this chair and being able to see what I see.”

Her reaction reflected just how special the moment had become. Brianna had taken a song with a beautiful musical identity and delivered it with enough confidence to make four experienced coaches stop and recognize her potential.

Riley Green also had something remarkable to say about the young singer. The country star called Brianna “by far the most naturally talented person I’ve seen on the show,” adding that it was exciting to witness someone with such a natural gift.

That endorsement was particularly interesting because Green comes from a very different musical background than Brianna. Yet her performance clearly connected with him, demonstrating that impressive vocal ability can transcend musical genres.

Clarkson, however, seemed especially fascinated by the technical aspects of Brianna’s singing.

“I haven’t heard runs like that since Whitney. You are 13 years old!” she exclaimed.

She even joked that Brianna was difficult to accept as an ordinary human being because her talent seemed almost unreal.

What made the moment more meaningful was Clarkson’s admission that she had not expected to hear this particular side of Brianna. Speaking to the cameras after the performance, the coach explained that the young singer had revealed an entirely different level of ability.

“Brianna showed me something completely different that I had not seen. I did not know that she capable of that kind of finesse and vocal. At 13?!” Clarkson said.

For a contestant competing against singers with different musical backgrounds and more years of experience, discovering a new dimension of her talent at exactly the right moment could make an enormous difference.

And the timing could hardly have been more important.

Brianna’s performance came during the first-ever Cut Week in The Voice history, a new competition stage that forced all four coaches to make difficult decisions before the Live Shows.

The format placed 28 remaining contestants in immediate danger of elimination. Each coach had seven singers, but only two could advance automatically. The other five were required to perform again for one final position on their respective teams.

That meant even a contestant who had impressed throughout the earlier rounds could not afford to deliver an ordinary performance.

Team Kelly was particularly competitive. Brianna faced Marcus Ladden Jr., Brooklyn Marie, Nina Howland, and Kyle Davis, with all five singers hoping to secure the final position.

For Clarkson, the decision was clearly not an easy one. She had to consider the performances, the artists’ development, and which singer she believed deserved another opportunity to demonstrate their abilities.

Brianna ultimately gave her an answer that was difficult to ignore.

Clarkson explained that she selected the teenager because she had revealed another layer of her talent that had not been visible before.

“I picked Brianna because, honestly, she showed me something I’d never seen that was another layer to her,” Clarkson explained.

The coach even joked about Brianna having more layers to reveal, comparing the discovery process to peeling an onion.

“She’s 13! I have to reward somebody being that incredible at such a young age. It is unheard of.”

With that decision, Brianna secured the final position on Team Kelly, joining Koumba Diallo and Anna McElroy as the three artists advancing to the Live Shows.

Her advancement is particularly interesting because it demonstrates how quickly a contestant’s position can change during a singing competition. An artist might already have impressed the coaches, but one unexpected performance can completely change how they are viewed.

For Brianna, singing “Inseparable” appears to have accomplished exactly that.

There is also something especially compelling about watching a young performer receive this level of recognition without being treated simply as a promising child singer. Clarkson, Latifah, and Green were responding to the musical ability they had just witnessed, not merely celebrating Brianna’s age.

Of course, comparisons to Whitney Houston come with enormous expectations. No 13-year-old should be expected to carry the legacy of one of music’s greatest voices, and Brianna still has plenty of room to grow as an artist.

But the comparison highlights something important about her potential. She has already demonstrated vocal qualities that made experienced performers take notice, and the Live Shows will give her another opportunity to show what she can do.

The next stage will also introduce a different kind of pressure. Instead of performing primarily to impress the coaches, Brianna will need to connect with viewers at home, who will have a greater influence over which contestants continue.

That could be an exciting opportunity for the young singer. If she can bring the same confidence and vocal control to the Live Shows, she may become one of the most interesting contestants to watch as Season 30 progresses.

Personally, the most impressive part of Brianna’s journey is that she managed to surprise even the coach who has been guiding her. At 13, discovering that she has another level of ability to unlock is an exciting sign of what her future could hold.

The Voice Season 30 Live Shows begin November 9 on NBC, and Brianna will be among the contestants hoping to turn an extraordinary Cut Week moment into a successful run toward the finale.

Do you agree with Kelly Clarkson’s Whitney Houston comparison? And could Brianna Cameron’s remarkable talent make her the youngest serious contender for the Season 30 championship?
