Blue Ivy Wins Grammy, Sparks Biggie Crown Debate and Breaks Records
Blue Ivy, the daughter of Jay-Z and Beyoncé, made history by winning a Grammy in the Best Music Video category. At just nine years old, she became the second youngest person ever to win a Grammy award.
In celebration of her win, Beyoncé shared a photo of Blue Ivy sipping from her Grammy, with a crown sitting thoughtfully atop her head. The crown quickly caught the attention of fans, as it closely resembled the one worn by the legendary Notorious B.I.G., known for his hits like “Juicy,” “Big Poppa,” and “Hypnotize.” The crown was famously worn by Biggie during his last photoshoot in 1997, just days before his tragic death.
Fans took to Twitter, with one user writing: “Blue Ivy flexing her first Grammy and Biggie’s crown is the best thing you’ll see today!” Another added, “She’s really so nonchalant about it. She’s wearing Biggie’s crown and sipping out of her own Grammy at nine years old???? Blue Ivy is a legend.” While it hasn’t been confirmed that the crown is indeed Biggie’s, many online noted the striking similarities to the iconic accessory worn by the hip-hop legend.
The crown gained even more fame last year when it was auctioned off by Sotheby’s in New York during their first-ever hip-hop auction. The crown, which originally cost about $6.59, sold for an astounding $595,000, and many believe that Jay-Z and Beyoncé may have been the buyers. Despite the fact that Sean “Diddy” Combs, Biggie’s label owner, initially didn’t approve of the crown, concerned it made Biggie look more like “Burger King” than the “King of New York,” the crown remains a cherished hip-hop artifact.
In the same spirit of legendary celebrity items, other auctioned items have broken records, including:
-
Michael Jordan’s Nike Air Jordan 1s – Sold for $61,544,000, these sneakers were worn by Jordan in 1985 and later signed by him, setting a Guinness World Record for the most expensive sneakers ever sold.
-
Darth Vader’s Helmet – The helmet worn by actor David Prowse in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back sold for $98,736,358 to an anonymous bidder in 2019.
