Crews Wright, a 17-year-old with a big love for old-school country music, brought something special to Hollywood Week on American Idol. He sang “Goodbye Time,” a classic song by Conway Twitty, and won over the judges and the audience.
Crews first appeared on the show during his audition. He sang a fun, lively version of “The Fireman” by George Strait. The judges—Lionel Richie, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan—loved his energy and gave him a Golden Ticket to Hollywood.
Hollywood Week started on March 31, and it was a tough round. Out of 144 contestants who made it to Hollywood, only 62 moved on after the first cuts. Crews was one of them!
Before he sang “Goodbye Time,” Crews told the judges why he thinks he could be the next American Idol. “I want to keep traditional country music alive,” he said. “Music isn’t about what’s popular right now—it’s about what lasts forever. I try to leave a little piece of myself on every stage I step on.”
“Goodbye Time” is a heartfelt song that Conway Twitty released back in 1988. It was a hit, reaching number 7 on the country music charts. Years later, in 2004, Blake Shelton sang it too, and his version reached number 10. Now, Crews has added his own amazing version to the list.
When Crews finished singing, the judges couldn’t believe how young he was. Luke Bryan laughed and said, “Do you swear you’re 17?” Carrie Underwood smiled and added, “I need to see a birth certificate.”
Luke had even more kind words. “You have so much to give with your talent and your love for classic country,” he said. “Picking a Conway Twitty song is pretty cool. I grew up listening to that, and it’s amazing that a 17-year-old like you loves it too. You won over the whole room!”
Crews’ performance was strong enough to get him through to the next round. If you want to see him shine, check out the video of his Hollywood Week performance. It’s hard to believe he’s only 17—he’s got a bright future ahead!
