Nearly five years after the tragic murder of Brooklyn drill rapper Pop Smoke, one of the individuals responsible has been sentenced to 29 years in prison.
The Tragic Loss of Pop Smoke
Pop Smoke, whose real name was Bashar Jackson, was a rising star in the rap scene, gaining fame with hits like “Dior” and “Welcome to the Party.” His career was taking off when he was tragically killed during a home invasion in Hollywood Hills on February 19, 2020. He was only 20 years old.
The robbers targeted him for his diamond Rolex watch and Cuban link chain, which they later sold for just $2,000.
Corey Walker Sentenced to 29 Years
On February 21, 2025, in a Los Angeles courtroom, Corey Walker, now 22, was sentenced to 29 years in prison after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter and home invasion robbery with a firearm.
Walker, described by prosecutors as the mastermind behind the crime, admitted his role in the planning, surveillance, and execution of the robbery that led to Pop Smoke’s death.
In court, Walker expressed remorse, saying:
“Even though the Jackson family isn’t here today, I would like to sincerely apologize for my unforgivable actions. There’s no apology that can make up for taking someone’s life.”
What Happened to the Other Suspects?
Walker was one of four individuals involved in the crime. Here’s what happened to the others:
- A 15-year-old (now 19) at the time of the crime will remain in juvenile detention until he turns 25.
- A 17-year-old pleaded guilty in 2023 and was sentenced to four years and two months in juvenile court.
- Keandre Rodgers (18 at the time) is still awaiting trial for murder, with his case currently under review.
Prosecutors Call Walker the “Mastermind”
Deputy District Attorney Hilary Williams made it clear that Walker played a key role in Pop Smoke’s murder.
“Corey Walker was not an innocent participant in any of this. He was the mastermind ringleader in the planning, driving, and provision of weapons to minors.”
She explained that Walker did surveillance on the home earlier that night, changed cars to avoid detection, and prepared the attack.
Justice for Pop Smoke
While Walker avoided a life sentence by taking a plea deal, his 29-year sentence marks a significant moment in the case. Pop Smoke’s death was a tragic loss for the music industry, but justice is finally being served.
