After two surgeries ended his sports dreams, Braden Rumfelt finds new hope on American Idol

Braden Rumfelt, a 22-year-old substitute teacher from Murphy, North Carolina, is quickly emerging as one of the most talked-about contestants of American Idol Season 24 thanks not only to his powerful voice, but also to the life-altering journey that led him to the Idol stage.

Before music took center stage in his life, Rumfelt had a very different dream. Encouraged by his father, he hoped to become a professional athlete. However, that dream was cut short during his teenage years when he began experiencing severe knee pain. Doctors later discovered a congenital leg condition that required two major lower-leg realignment surgeries, bringing his athletic aspirations to an abrupt end.

“It was tough seeing everybody be able to do what I wanted to do,” Rumfelt shared ahead of his audition, reflecting on the emotional toll of watching his sports dreams slip away. The recovery process was long and challenging, but it ultimately opened the door to a new calling—music.

Throughout that difficult period, Braden found comfort and healing in singing, often alongside his twin brother, Kellen Rumfelt, who has been his constant source of encouragement. “As I’m hurt, it kind of hit me like, wait—I feel better when I am singing,” Braden explained. Kellen echoed that sentiment, telling producers that music had always been his brother’s true gift. “His talent is singing. I couldn’t be more proud of him. He’s my hero,” Kellen said.

The brothers brought that bond into the American Idol audition room, where Braden delivered a goosebumps-inducing rendition of Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush,” with Kellen accompanying him on acoustic guitar. Dressed casually in a tan jacket, white T-shirt, jeans, and white Nike sneakers, Rumfelt let his voice do the talking—showcasing effortless control, emotional depth, and a soaring upper register that immediately caught the judges’ attention.

The response from Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan was unanimous and enthusiastic. Underwood praised the unexpected strength of his voice while encouraging him to relax into the performance. Richie highlighted the “sweet texture” of his high notes, noting that his voice doesn’t break under pressure. Bryan went even further, telling Rumfelt he has the potential to go all the way. “He can sing, y’all,” Bryan said with a smile. “You’re going to do really good in this competition.”
