Annie Lennox’s Surprise Performance of Fragile Leaves Sting and Fans Speechless

At the 2017 Polar Music Prize banquet in Stockholm, Sweden, Annie Lennox delivered a surprise performance that left an indelible mark on the evening’s festivities. Honoring Sting, one of the year’s laureates alongside jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter, Lennox took the stage to perform a haunting rendition of Sting’s 1987 classic “Fragile.”

The Polar Music Prize, established in 1989 by ABBA’s manager Stig “Stikkan” Anderson, is one of the world’s most prestigious music awards, recognizing exceptional achievements across all genres. The 2017 ceremony, held at the Stockholm Concert Hall, featured performances by various artists, including The Tallest Man on Earth and José Feliciano, who paid tribute to Sting’s illustrious career.

Lennox’s appearance was kept a closely guarded secret to maximize the impact of her tribute. As she approached the piano, she addressed Sting directly, expressing her admiration:

“You know, I’ve been a really sincere fan of your music for decades. This is such a privilege. I love you very, very much, and I love your music even more.”

Her performance of “Fragile,” a song written by Sting in response to the death of American engineer Ben Linder in Nicaragua, was both poignant and powerful. Accompanied solely by her piano, Lennox’s interpretation added a new depth to the song’s themes of vulnerability and resilience.

The audience was visibly moved, with Sting himself appearing deeply touched by the tribute. At the conclusion of the performance, he stood to offer a heartfelt ovation, placing his hand over his heart and mouthing “Thank you” to Lennox.

This memorable moment underscored the mutual respect and admiration between two of music’s most influential artists, highlighting the enduring power of song to convey emotion and connect individuals across different experiences.
