Celtic Thunder moves fans with a heartfelt tribute to late member George Donaldson, showing never-before-seen behind-the-scenes footage

This has never been seen before — Celtic Thunder has released a deeply emotional tribute video honoring the late George Donaldson, marking what would have been his birthday.

The video, which includes never-before-seen behind-the-scenes footage, is filled with heartfelt, funny, and memorable moments that highlight George’s warmth, closeness, and laughter shared with his bandmates.

“George will forever be in our hearts. George would have been 49 years old today. He may have passed, but his legacy will live on forever,” the group shared, remembering their beloved colleague and friend.

Donaldson, affectionately known as the “steadfast one” of Celtic Thunder, passed away suddenly on March 12, 2014, at his home in Glasgow, Scotland, from a massive heart attack. He was just 46 years old. Born on February 1, 1968, he is survived by his wife, Carolyn, and their daughter, Sarah, whom he lovingly described as the “light of my life.”

A self-taught musician accomplished on both guitar and flute, Donaldson’s passion for Celtic music was inspired by his late father, Bernard. One of the proudest moments of his life came in 2000, when he performed before 65,000 fans — and his father — at Celtic Park in Glasgow during the opening match of the season.

In 2007, George auditioned for Celtic Thunder producer Sharon Browne and became an integral part of the group’s celebration of Irish and Scottish heritage. As the only Scotsman and the only married family man in the lineup, he helped define the identity of the ensemble.

Over the years, he appeared in all nine Celtic Thunder concert specials and contributed to every album and DVD up to Mythology. With the group, he performed on global stages, from sold-out tours to iconic appearances at St. Patrick’s Day parades in Chicago, Boston, and New York, as well as at President Barack Obama’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration at the White House.

Outside of Celtic Thunder, Donaldson was also an acclaimed solo artist in Glasgow’s thriving folk scene. He won the Irish Music Awards in 2011 and 2012, and released two critically praised solo albums: The White Rose (2011) and The World in My Mind (2013).
