At the 43rd Annual Kennedy Center Honors, Garth Brooks, the famous singer of “Friends in Low Places,” had a hard time not crying. He was sitting in the front row next to his wife, Trisha Yearwood, watching another country music star, Kelly Clarkson, sing his song “The Dance.” This happened during a big event to honor amazing artists, and Garth was one of them!
“The Dance” is a special song that Garth sang back in 1990 when he released his very first album. Kelly Clarkson loves it too. She once told Garth on her TV show that the song helped her feel better after her tough divorce from her husband, Brandon Blackstock. It even gave her ideas to write her own song about divorce for her next album.
Garth wasn’t the only one being honored that night. Other super talented people like Joan Baez, a folk singer, Midori, a violin player, Dick Van Dyke, a funny actor, and Debbie Allen, a dancer and actress, were celebrated too. The Kennedy Center Honors is a yearly party that says thank you to artists who’ve made the world a better place with their talents. The boss of the Kennedy Center, David M. Rubenstein, said Garth made country music more popular than anyone else ever had.
The event had lots of fun parts, like singing and speeches, but because of the COVID-19 sickness going around, it happened in May instead of December. They kept it small and safe so everyone could still enjoy it. People watching got to see medals given to the honorees and hear some great performances.
You can watch the whole Kennedy Center Honors show, including Kelly Clarkson singing “The Dance,” on TV. It’ll be on CBS this Sunday, June 6, starting at 8 PM ET. Don’t miss it—it’s going to be awesome!
