What started as a fierce rap battle at The Hip Hop Shop in 1996 ended with Kuniva earning a spot alongside Eminem in D12.
The Battle That Changed Everything
Before they became groupmates, Eminem and Kuniva went head-to-head in a legendary rap battle on February 17, 1996. The event was hosted by Big Proof, the heart of Detroit’s battle rap scene.
Kuniva recently looked back on that unforgettable night, sharing on social media:
“I wonder if I still look like I seen a ghost? 🤣🤣 One of the greatest moments of my life. That loss set me up for the ultimate win…joining D12!”

At the time, no one could have predicted what would come next. But that battle showcased Eminem’s raw talent and hunger, while also becoming a pivotal moment for Kuniva, leading him to join D12.
The Rise of D12
Following that battle, Kuniva joined D12, a group that would go on to dominate the early 2000s with platinum-selling albums Devil’s Night and D12 World. Known for their wild personalities, sharp lyricism, and undeniable chemistry, the group made their mark on hip-hop history.
D12’s Legacy Lives On
After the tragic passing of Proof in 2006, D12’s activity slowed down. In 2018, Eminem officially confirmed their disbandment in Stepping Stone from Kamikaze.
However, their legacy remains strong—and it all started with that epic 1996 rap battle, proving that sometimes, a single moment can change everything.
