Ice Cube fans, rejoice! The legendary rapper and actor has finally sealed the deal with Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema to bring a new Friday movie to life. Titled Last Friday, this will be the first installment in the beloved comedy series in over 20 years, and Cube is both writing and starring in it.
New Line’s COO, Richard Brenner, spilled the beans in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “We are making another Friday,” he confirmed. “We just closed a deal with Ice Cube to write and star. It’s going to be called Last Friday.” While details like returning cast members are still under wraps, the news alone has fans buzzing with excitement.
Cube’s been dropping hints about a fourth Friday film for years, sharing his journey to get it off the ground. Last October, on the Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast, he sounded hopeful. “It’s coming back,” he said. “We gonna make it dope, make it funny, bring it up to date, introduce new characters, bring back old characters, create the feeling the movie gives you.” He added, “People love Friday because everyone’s lived a thousand Fridays.”
The road to Last Friday hasn’t been easy. Cube opened up about the delays in a chat with Flavor Flav a few months earlier. “We finally got some traction with Warner Bros.,” he said. “They have new leadership. My man Mike DeLuca, who was at New Line when I did the first Friday, Players Club, and All About the Benjamins, is now running Warner Bros.” Cube recalled pushing DeLuca, saying, “Yo, what the fuck is going on with Friday? Let’s get this back online.”
The delays hit hard, especially with the loss of key Friday stars. “I was a little hot ’cause they took so long,” Cube admitted. “John Witherspoon passed away. Tiny passed away. A.J. Johnson passed away. We keep losing people, and y’all keep dicking around not doing the movie the way it needs to be done.” But now, with Warner Bros. on board, Cube’s determined to do it right. “The key is it gotta be done, or we shouldn’t fuck with it,” he said. “They finally came to their senses.”
From the smoky streets of South Central to the big screen, Friday has been a cult classic since 1995. With Last Friday, Ice Cube is ready to blend nostalgia with fresh vibes—new faces, old favorites, and that same laid-back humor fans can’t get enough of. Stay tuned for more updates as this long-awaited sequel takes shape!
