Monday night’s American Idol “Songs of Faith” episode delivered several memorable performances, but one stood out for how unexpectedly it unfolded. Kyndal Inskeep stepped onto the stage with a traditional hymn—“Nothing but the Blood of Jesus”—and turned it into something far more personal and dynamic.
From Hawaii to the Top 14
Leading into the performance, Inskeep had already built momentum. During the Hawaii round at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, she performed her original song “Women of Me” and earned a Platinum Ticket from a focus group of industry tastemakers. That recognition secured her place in the Top 20, and after the next round of eliminations, she advanced again into the Top 14.
With the field narrowing, her next song choice carried weight. Instead of opting for something contemporary, she chose a hymn that has been part of American music tradition since 1876.
A Performance That Slowly Unfolded
From the opening moments, there was a sense of restraint in her delivery. The arrangement felt controlled, almost as if she was holding something back. That tension gave the performance a haunting quality, drawing attention to every subtle shift in her voice.
Then the dynamic changed.
As the song progressed, Inskeep released that restraint, allowing the performance to expand both vocally and physically. Her energy became impossible to contain, and the stage presence followed—movement, expression, and vocal intensity all rising at once.
It wasn’t just a rendition of a hymn. It felt like a transformation happening in real time.
Judges React to the Shift
The response from the judges reflected that shift. Lionel Richie focused on the tension he saw building throughout the performance, saying, “The most enjoyable part is watching you just almost try not to implode. You were so contained! I said, ‘For God’s sake, let it out, let it go’…Bring me more of that.”
Carrie Underwood highlighted something different—the sense of timing and purpose behind the moment. “You are such an artist, and I do not, for the life of me, know how you are not like, super duper famous already. Actually, I do know, because that’s how the Lord works, and you’re here for this time, right now. That was incredible…I’m just in awe watching you.”
Luke Bryan added a more instinctive reaction, noting, “I was really happy to see the song flow through your body, and your soul, and your voice.”
The standing ovation that followed wasn’t just about the vocal performance—it was about the progression within it.
What Comes Next
At this stage of the competition, moments like this carry more than immediate impact. They shape perception, momentum, and the way contestants are remembered moving forward.
Whether it will be enough to secure a place in the Top 12 remains to be seen. But for one performance, a familiar hymn became something else entirely—and in doing so, it shifted how the night will be remembered.
