Lulu and Maurice Gibb’s Heartfelt ‘First of May’ Duet: A Timeless Celebration of Love and Music

Lulu and Maurice Gibb had a love story that was exciting but didn’t last long. Their marriage was full of ups and downs, like a roller coaster ride.

Lulu was a young singer from Scotland, only 19 years old, when she met Maurice, who played bass and keyboards for a famous band called the Bee Gees. They fell in love quickly and got married just a few months after meeting. This happened right before Lulu won a big singing contest called Eurovision, which made her a star all over the world. Maurice and the Bee Gees were also becoming very popular, so both of them were busy with their music careers.

But things started to go wrong. Maurice drank too much, and that caused problems between them. Years later, Lulu talked about their marriage on a TV show called Piers Morgan’s Life Stories. She said, “We thought we were the best in the world and felt so special.” But she also said they shouldn’t have gotten married so fast. They were young and maybe just loved the idea of being in love. Their marriage ended in 1974, and they went their separate ways.

Even after their breakup, Lulu and Maurice stayed good friends. They cared about each other for the rest of their lives. Something amazing happened almost 30 years later, in 2002, when they performed together on a TV show called An Audience With Lulu. People were so surprised and happy to see them on stage together again. Other famous singers like Ronan Keating and Elton John had been on the show before, but Maurice’s appearance felt extra special.

By this time, Maurice had worked hard to stop drinking, which had caused trouble in his life before. Lulu invited him to sing with her, and he suggested a song called “Islands In The Stream,” which the Bee Gees had written for two other singers, Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. It was a huge hit in the 1980s. Lulu also picked another song, “First of May,” which was very important to them. They had sung it together on TV when they were newlyweds, so it brought back sweet memories.

When they performed, their voices sounded wonderful together, and the audience loved it. It was like a beautiful moment that showed how much they still respected and cared for each other, even after all those years. Their story teaches us that love can change over time, but kindness and friendship can last forever.
