As the 15th anniversary of Michael Jackson’s passing approaches, fans may be wondering about the King of Pop’s famous pet chimpanzee, Bubbles. At 41 years old, Bubbles is thriving at the Center for Great Apes in Wauchula, Florida, where he enjoys a peaceful and comfortable life.
A Happy and Relaxed Life
Bubbles spends his days exploring tunnels, building nests under trees, taking midday naps, and even painting. Weighing about 180 pounds, he receives regular checkups from a veterinarian and a dedicated team of caregivers. Despite his past in the entertainment world, there are no signs that he was ever mistreated.
Still Loved and Cared For
Even after Michael Jackson’s passing in 2009, his estate continues to contribute to Bubbles’ care, which costs around $30,000 per year. The pop star’s dedicated fan club also sends treats like mangos and coconuts as well as blankets. Some of Michael’s family members and attorneys have visited him over the years, describing their encounters as “sweet and heartwarming.”
Does Bubbles Still Enjoy Michael’s Music?
Interestingly, while the sanctuary plays Michael Jackson’s songs and videos, Bubbles doesn’t seem to react any differently than the other primates. He simply enjoys his own activities and friendships.
His Journey to the Sanctuary
Born in 1983 in a biomedical lab, Bubbles was taken from his mother as a baby and raised as a Hollywood-trained chimp before becoming Michael Jackson’s pet. He traveled the world with the superstar, even visiting Japan on a promotional tour at just four years old.
However, by 2005, Bubbles had grown too large and strong to be kept as a pet, so he was moved to the Center for Great Apes. There, he found companionship with other chimps, including his best friends, Ripley and Oopsie.
A Playful Side
Bubbles is described as the dominant male in his group, but he also has a mischievous side. The sanctuary notes that he sometimes spits water or throws sand at strangers—just to see their reaction!
Home to Other Famous Primates
Bubbles isn’t the only celebrity chimp at the sanctuary. The facility also cares for:
- Sammy, who starred in Dunston Checks In (1996)
- Jonah and Jacob, who appeared in Planet of the Apes (2001)
- Bo and Joe, who were featured in Tiger King
A Safe and Loving Environment
The Center for Great Apes provides a permanent home for chimps and orangutans rescued from the entertainment industry, research labs, and the pet trade. Thanks to their dedication, Bubbles is enjoying a happy, peaceful retirement after years in the spotlight.
At 41, Bubbles is still going strong and living a life filled with care, comfort, and a little bit of mischief—just as he deserves!
