Samantha Gibb’s Emotional Performance of ‘You Win Again’ Honors Maurice Gibb’s Legacy

In 2014, something special happened during Barry Gibb’s Mythology Tour. Barry, a member of the famous band the Bee Gees, invited his niece, Samantha Gibb, to sing with him on stage. They performed songs that her dad, Maurice Gibb, and Barry’s brothers made famous. The Bee Gees are a well-known singing family, and Barry loves watching the younger family members perform, even though it makes him emotional.

This was Barry’s first tour without his brothers, Maurice and Robin, who had passed away. Instead, he brought his son Stephen and niece Samantha along. In Philadelphia, Samantha sang a beautiful version of “You Win Again,” a big hit from 1987. A fan recorded a video of her singing while Barry watched proudly from the back, smiling and sipping water. Samantha also sang other Bee Gees songs like “Stayin’ Alive” with Barry and Stephen, and a lovely duet with Barry called “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart.”

“You Win Again” is a special song because it was recorded in Maurice’s garage, maybe even when Samantha was a little girl. It was a big comeback for the Bee Gees, their first hit in almost eight years. Maurice and a music producer used a new drum program to make the song sound unique. Maurice loved it and said it showed how well the brothers worked together. He once explained in an interview that when they wrote songs, it felt like one person, not three. He said, “When we get together and write it’s not like three individuals, it’s like one person in the room. Usually, we just choose one title from a book of titles. We didn’t know how ‘You Win Again’ would work as a song, but I thought it was a great title. I recorded stomps and other things, and it turned out to be a large demo in my garage.”

Samantha also wanted to honor her dad and uncles. She and her partner, Lazaro, started by singing an old Bee Gees song, “New York Mining Disaster 1941.” They loved it so much they decided to do more. Samantha said, “We’ve wanted to honor my dad and my uncles for a very long time. We began reaching out because it seemed like the proper time, and we spoke with everyone. Everyone chose to perform a rendition of a song that they loved. The next thing we knew we had a 10 song album.” Their album was a way to keep the Bee Gees’ music alive for everyone to enjoy.

This moment on stage showed how music can bring families together, even when some are no longer here. Samantha’s singing made her dad’s songs shine, and Barry was so happy to share the stage with her.
