Singer-songwriter Skylar Grey recently opened up about a heartfelt moment with Eminem following their iconic performance at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2011.
Skylar, who performed “I Need A Doctor” alongside Eminem and Dr. Dre, and also participated in a medley that included Rihanna and Adam Levine for “Love The Way You Lie (Part 2),” revealed she wasn’t happy with her performance that night—even though Eminem clearly was.
Sharing a throwback clip from the show on Instagram, Skylar wrote:
“The most surreal moment in my life as a performer. I dreamed about being on that stage since childhood. After we got off stage, Em gave me a big kiss on the cheek and seemed very pleased with the performance. However, I locked myself in my dressing room and cried because I thought I did not sing good! Will forever be hard on myself but I guess that is what keeps me reaching…”
This isn’t the first time she’s reflected on the performance. In a Genius annotation, Skylar previously described the night as one of the most special moments of her life, saying:
“The most amazing thing for me with this was getting to perform at the Grammys with Dr. Dre and Eminem (‘I Need A Doctor’) when Rihanna opened up our medley with ‘Love The Way You Lie.’ That was a really special moment in my life.”
“I Need A Doctor” is an emotional, cinematic track that explores the close bond between Eminem and Dr. Dre. Produced by Alex da Kid, the song was originally intended for Dre’s long-rumored album DETOX. The lyrics highlight Dre’s struggle with creativity and self-belief, with Eminem passionately encouraging him to rediscover his purpose through music.
That night, Eminem led the Grammys with the most nominations and walked away with Best Rap Solo Performance for “Not Afraid” and Best Rap Album for Recovery—beating out projects by Drake, Jay-Z, B.o.B, The Roots, Ludacris, T.I., and Kanye West.
