Some Voices Never Fade — Celtic Thunder Honors George Donaldson With a Moving Tribute That Reunited Memories, Music, and Fans Worldwide

Celtic Thunder has paid a moving tribute to late principal singer George Donaldson, capturing the unforgettable moments that made him a beloved figure among fans and fellow members alike.

The special video, set to the stirring melody of Caledonia, showcases Donaldson’s iconic performances with the original members, eliciting tears and heartfelt comments from viewers around the world.

“George will forever be in our hearts. He would have been 49 years old today. Though he may have passed, his legacy lives on forever,” one fan wrote, echoing the sentiments of thousands who flooded the tribute video with memories and admiration.

Comments recalling Donaldson’s stature, unique voice, and magnetic presence poured in, illustrating the deep impact he had on both audiences and the Celtic Thunder family.

Donaldson, who tragically passed away from a massive heart attack on 12 March 2014 at the age of 46, left behind his wife, Carolyn, and daughter, Sarah, then 13, whom he described as “the light of my life.” Born and raised in Glasgow, Donaldson was a self-taught musician, proficient on both guitar and flute, and inspired from an early age by his father Bernard’s love of Celtic music. One of his proudest moments came performing for 65,000 fans, including his father, at the Celtic Park opening match in 2000.

Joining Celtic Thunder in 2007 after a successful audition for producer Sharon Browne, Donaldson quickly became an integral part of the show’s celebration of Irish and Scottish heritage.

Known affectionately as the “steadfast” one, he was the group’s sole Scotsman and only married family man, appearing in all nine Celtic Thunder concert specials and on every CD and DVD release, including last year’s Mythology.

His voice and artistry left an indelible mark on Celtic music, celebrated internationally during tours and performances at events such as St. Patrick’s Day parades in Chicago, Boston, New York, and even for President and Mrs. Obama at the White House.
