Vince Gill’s Tearful Tribute: ‘Go Rest High on That Mountain’ Honors His 100-Year-Old Mom with a Heartbreaking Nod to Her Son

The Grand Ole Opry turned 100 years old on March 19, 2025, and it was a big party with lots of music and special moments. One of the best parts was when Vince Gill sang a beautiful song called “Go Rest High on That Mountain” to honor his mom, who is also turning 100 this year!

Before he started singing, Vince talked to everyone watching. He asked them to think about people they’ve lost recently. Then he said, “This is about her son,” dedicating the song to his mom. It made the moment extra special and touching.

Vince wasn’t alone on stage. His friends Ricky Skaggs and Sonya Isaacs, who are also part of the Opry family, sang with him. Their voices mixed together perfectly and made the song even more amazing. Vince wrote “Go Rest High on That Mountain” a long time ago after his friend Keith Whitley died in 1989. He finished it later when his brother Bob passed away in 1993. It’s a song about saying goodbye and remembering people we love, and lots of people feel connected to it.

While they sang, the TV showed pictures of Opry members who aren’t with us anymore. It was a sad but beautiful way to remember them. The song and the voices made everyone feel so much that many people in the audience cried.

Vince loves the Grand Ole Opry a lot. He first sang there in 1989 and became an official member in 1991. He’s been singing on that stage ever since! He’s super nice and helps other singers, and he really respects the Opry’s history. But even with all his love for music, Vince always puts his family first. One time, he said no to singing at the Opry because he promised his daughter Jenny he’d play guitar at her school talent show. That shows what a great dad and person he is.

When Vince sang at the Opry’s 100th birthday, it wasn’t just a song—it was a way to show love and think about special people. By singing for his mom, he showed how music can make us feel better and remember the ones we care about. It was one of the best moments of the night, making the Opry’s big celebration unforgettable!
