At a special New York City show, Pink invited her father, Jim Moore, onstage for a heartfelt duet of “I Have Seen the Rain.” Jim accompanied her on acoustic guitar, lending gentle backing vocals, while Pink’s soulful lead carried the moving folk ballad. The intimate crowd clapped along, but the real magic was in the way father and daughter looked into each other’s eyes, savoring the moment together. Known mostly for her powerhouse pop anthems, Pink revealed a softer, more vulnerable side of her artistry, proving she can master any genre with ease.
Before the song, Pink credited her dad with inspiring her love of music, introducing him as her “first rock star.” She explained that Jim had written “I Have Seen the Rain” nearly 40 years earlier while serving in the Vietnam War, and shared how meaningful it was for him to finally perform it on such a grand stage. She even called him her “favorite person in the whole world” before they began to play.
Jim, a Vietnam veteran, originally penned the song during his deployment. Pink later included it as a hidden track on her 2006 album I’m Not Dead Yet, where the two also performed it together as a stripped-down acoustic duet. The live rendition in New York was captured as part of Pink’s flash mob performance, which also featured crowd-pleasing hits like “Get the Party Started.”
Pink has often spoken about how much the song means to her. She revealed that it was the first song she ever learned to sing, recalling how she and her dad performed it at veteran events when she was young—experiences that taught her how to harmonize and sparked her love for acoustic guitar. When they recorded it for her album, Pink said it was all done in one live take: her dad playing and singing while she harmonized alongside him. “That was really, really a good time,” she reflected.
The lyrics of “I Have Seen the Rain” capture the fears of a soldier in the field and the struggles veterans face after returning home, showing Jim’s gift as a songwriter. Sadly, Jim Moore passed away in August 2021 at the age of 75 after battling prostate cancer. Fans continue to celebrate his legacy, remembering the special bond he shared with his daughter through music.
