Kim Basinger doesn’t do many interviews, but in a rare chat with Variety, she shared her experience filming 8 Mile—especially what surprised her most about working with Eminem.
Why Kim Basinger Almost Didn’t Take the Role
Basinger played Stephanie, the troubled mother of Eminem’s character, Jimmy. When she first read the script, one line instantly caught her attention:
“Do you want some fing cereal or some fing eggs?”
Instead of just accepting the role, she called the film’s director, Curtis Hanson, with one request.
“I didn’t even say hello. I just said, ‘If you’ll change the line to f**ing pancakes, I’ll do the movie.’”*
Hanson agreed, and with that small change, Basinger was in.
How She and Eminem Tackled Tough Scenes
8 Mile explores difficult family relationships, and Basinger wanted to make sure the intense mother-son scenes felt real. She remembers telling Eminem:
“This is only a movie. We’re pretending, but we have to go for it. I’m going to say some horrible things, and I won’t hold back.”
She compared their performances to two fighters in a ring, fully committed to making each scene as powerful as possible.
What Surprised Her About Eminem
At the time, Eminem was one of the biggest stars in the world, but Basinger was shocked by his humility.
“I thought he’d have a huge ego, an entourage, all of that—but he had some of the nicest people around him I’ve ever met. There’s nobody like him.”
Although Basinger is selective about her roles, 8 Mile remains a standout moment in her career. And thanks to her script tweak, “f***ing pancakes” became an unexpected piece of movie history.
