In 2021, Jonathan Monroe says he stepped into a role that many would consider high-profile—working full-time as part of Kanye West’s security team. On the surface, it was a position tied to one of the most influential figures in music. But according to Monroe, what started as a professional arrangement slowly turned into something far more complicated.
Now, years later, that experience has resurfaced in the form of a lawsuit seeking nearly $1 million in damages.
Claims of Unpaid Work and Growing Frustration

“When I asked for cash or use of his credit card to cover the expense, [Kanye] walked away from me without a response,” he said.
According to Monroe, attempts to recover the money owed to him were unsuccessful, leading him to pursue legal action.

This isn’t the first legal challenge West has faced this year. Earlier, another former employee, Tony Saxon, was awarded $140,000 following a separate case involving claims tied to medical expenses and pain and suffering. While the details differ, the timing adds another layer to an already complicated period for the artist.

Just days before Monroe’s lawsuit became public, West made headlines for a different reason. Following controversial antisemitic remarks, he was banned from entering the UK, resulting in the cancellation of his scheduled appearances at London’s Wireless Festival.
Speaking on the decision, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer made the government’s stance clear.
“Kanye West should never have been invited to headline Wireless. This government stands firmly with the Jewish community, and we will not stop in our fight to confront and defeat the poison of antisemitism.”
In a follow-up statement, he added, “We will always take the action necessary to protect the public and uphold our values.”
