Lionel Richie has confirmed that he will return to the American Idol judging panel alongside Luke Bryan and Carrie Underwood for the show’s upcoming 25th season, following recent health concerns that forced him to step back from some performances.
The announcement was made during Luke Bryan’s concert at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, where Bryan and Underwood revealed the news on stage while Richie appeared through a video message. The trio surprised the audience by confirming that all three judges would be returning for another season of the long-running singing competition.
“American Idol” fans will once again see the familiar judging lineup of Richie, Bryan and Underwood when the milestone 25th season premieres in spring 2027. Longtime host Ryan Seacrest is also set to return.
Richie’s return comes after a challenging period for the music legend. The 77-year-old singer recently underwent a heart procedure for atrial fibrillation, a condition involving an irregular heartbeat. His representative said the procedure was successful and that Richie was recovering, although he planned to take time to rest before returning to the stage.
The health concerns came after Richie experienced several medical issues during his tour with Earth, Wind & Fire. He had previously been hospitalized following episodes of dizziness and later underwent additional heart-related treatment. Some upcoming concert dates were affected as he focused on recovery.
Despite those setbacks, Richie has remained committed to his career and his role on American Idol. His return signals that he plans to continue mentoring new singers and sharing his decades of music experience with contestants.
