Adam Lambert delivered an unexpected finale at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, making a surprise appearance during a star-studded tribute to the late George Michael.
The 44-year-old singer was not announced as part of the tribute lineup before the show. But on Sunday, September 27, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, Lambert suddenly took the stage to close the emotional performance with one of Michael’s most recognizable songs, “Freedom.”
The surprise appearance brought together several of the artists who had already performed during the tribute, turning the finale into a larger celebration of Michael’s music and legacy.

Lambert performed “Freedom” alongside fellow queer artists Saint Harison, Meek and MNEK, as well as Sombr, Raye and Teddy Swims.
Sombr opened the tribute with “Faith,” followed by “Father Figure.”
Raye then took the stage for “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me),” before Teddy Swims performed “Careless Whisper.”
After the individual performances, Lambert appeared unexpectedly for the closing number, joined by the other artists.
The tribute had been introduced earlier in the ceremony by Orville Peck.
A tribute spanning George Michael’s biggest songs
The performances showcased several defining moments from Michael’s career, with each artist bringing their own style to his music.
Sombr’s opening selections revisited Michael’s solo work, while Raye performed his collaboration with Aretha Franklin. Teddy Swims then tackled “Careless Whisper,” one of Michael’s most enduring hits.
Lambert’s surprise performance of “Freedom” brought the tribute to its conclusion.
His appearance was particularly notable because his involvement had not been revealed ahead of the ceremony, making his arrival onstage one of the night’s unexpected moments.
George Michael’s lasting connection to the VMAs
Michael had a significant history with the MTV Video Music Awards during his career.
He won four VMAs and was also honored with the Video Vanguard Award in 1989.
The 2026 tribute comes as renewed attention surrounds Michael’s recorded and filmed legacy. The live album George Michael: The Faith Tour is scheduled for release on November 6, while the feature-length film George Michael: The Faith Tour is set to arrive in US theaters on December 11.
George Michael died in 2016 at the age of 53.
