At 78 years old, Gilmour has been hitting the road hard to promote his new album Luck and Strange, and he just debuted the live cut of “The Piper’s Call” on YouTube on December 14, 2024. Gilmour has really come into his own as a frontman over the years, and wow, the sound of his voice together with Romany is gorgeous. Gilmour’s performance of “The Piper’s Call” with his solo band has already drawn 560,000 views in the four weeks since it went online. Fans loved to see the English guitar god do his thing onstage in 2024 and added comments such as “How strangely lucky we are to witness not only new music from Gilmour but also rocking out with his daughter on stage!” and “This gave me goosebumps! Watching him have fun performing with Romany is the stuff of warm fuzzies. Goodness, I love this!”

One of the greatest Gilmour moments came from Pink Floyd’s iconic performance live in Pompeii, Italy, shot in October 1971. In the opening verse of “Echoes,” Gilmour shares a heavenly dual lead vocal with his bandmate Rick Wright, and I know I don’t need to mention there’s plenty of guitar genius going on too. Pink Floyd were filmed over four days performing in the ancient Roman amphitheatre, creating such an incredible document of the band at the peak of their powers.

Gilmour released his fifth solo studio album Luck and Strange on September 6, 2024. The album was a collaboration between Gilmour and his wife Polly Samson, with the Pink Floyd star writing the music and Samson providing the lyrics. Romany Gilmour appears on eight out of the nine songs, providing vocals and harp. The album is also notable for featuring electric piano and Hammond organ from the late great Pink Floyd keyboardist Rick Wright on the song “Luck and Strange.” Wright’s contributions were recorded during a Pink Floyd jam and writing session in Gilmour’s barn-turned-studio several years prior. Gilmour subsequently used the material from the session as the basis for the newly released song.
