Watch: Neil Diamond Gives Surprise Performance During Opening of Broadway Show ‘A Beautiful Noise

The opening night of A Beautiful Noise, The Neil Diamond Musical at the Broadhurst Theatre on December 4 turned into an unforgettable evening when Neil Diamond himself took the mic to perform his iconic 1969 hit Sweet Caroline.

Before his surprise performance, Diamond made a grand entrance on the red carpet alongside his wife, Katie McNeil, receiving a rousing standing ovation as he stepped into the theater. Then, from his box seat, he treated the audience to an impromptu rendition of Sweet Caroline, filling the venue with the signature energy and joy that have defined his career. Among the star-studded audience were music mogul Clive Davis and Broadway legends Bernadette Peters, Jane Krakowski, and Audra McDonald.

The musical, which takes audiences through Diamond’s life and celebrated hits—including Sweet Caroline, America, and Cracklin’ Rosie—draws its title from his 1976 album Beautiful Noise. The Broadway production serves as a heartfelt tribute to his remarkable legacy.

This special Broadway appearance marked Diamond’s first hometown performance in New York City since 2017. The legendary singer-songwriter, now 81, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2018, prompting him to retire from touring. Despite stepping away from the stage, Diamond remains committed to music, expressing his desire to continue writing and recording. His last live performance of Sweet Caroline before this moment took place at a Boston Red Sox game in June 2022.

Parkinson’s disease, a progressive neurological disorder that affects movement, balance, and coordination, has made large-scale touring increasingly difficult for Diamond. However, he has reassured fans that his passion for music remains unwavering.

“I plan to stay active in writing, recording, and other creative projects for as long as I can,” Diamond stated when announcing his retirement from touring in 2018. As he canceled his scheduled performances in Australia and New Zealand that year, he expressed heartfelt gratitude to his devoted fans, acknowledging their unwavering support.

“My thanks go out to my loyal and devoted audiences around the world. Your encouragement and love mean everything to me. This journey has been ‘so good, so good, so good’—all because of you.”

Most recently, Diamond curated A Neil Diamond Christmas, a festive collection featuring tracks from his previous holiday albums, including The Christmas Album (1992), The Christmas Album Volume II (1994), A Cherry Cherry Christmas (2009), and Acoustic Christmas (2016). The album showcases his unique take on seasonal classics, making it a perfect soundtrack for the holiday season.

Meanwhile, A Beautiful Noise, The Neil Diamond Musical continues its open-ended run at the Broadhurst Theatre, celebrating the legacy of a true musical icon.
