Eric Clapton’s Heartfelt “It Makes No Difference” Cover Leaves Festival Speechless

“A legend, an artist, a special man” is how actor Bill Murray describes Eric Clapton at the beginning of this performance – and when you watch the performance for yourself, you will realize why. Striding out onto the stage like he owns it in its entirety, Eric and his band proceed to launch into a truly majestic performance of the iconic 1970s rock tune ‘It Makes No Difference’. The video has been watched by hundreds of thousands of people already, and more views are flooding in every single day!

From the moment he picks up his guitar, Eric makes slick licks and hard-to-master runs look easy, in the way that only a true professional could. His vocals sound brilliant too, with many viewers commenting on the passion in his voice and in his playing. “His singing and playing are still from the heart” reads the video’s top comment, and listening to his incredible rendition in this video, it’s pretty hard to disagree.

The performance took place at the Crossroads Guitar Festival in 2023 and is lifted from a new live album and concert film recorded that was released at the end of November this year. Eric is actually the founder of the festival, which raises money to fund the Crossroads Centre (also founded by Eric), a drug treatment clinic in Antigua. The festival has been running since the late 1990s, although it did not receive its official name until the concert in 2004.

This performance from 2019, meanwhile, surely has to be one of the best performances that Eric has ever given at one of the Crossroads festivals (or indeed during his career). Here he is playing his genre-defining single ‘Layla’, accompanied by US singer-songwriter John Mayer and an extremely talented band. Again, Eric’s vocals are imbued with passion and feeling, while the song’s iconic lead riff still sounds fresh and original even numerous decades after the song was originally released.

No doubt the majority of readers are already familiar with at least some of Eric Clapton’s work. If you didn’t already know about his Crossroad Festivals, however, now is the time to start digging deep into the many performances from the festivals that have been documented on YouTube over the years.
