A voice for the Madman, a night to remember, and a cause worth every note.
On July 5, comedy-rock icon Jack Black took center stage to deliver one of the most heartfelt and electrifying performances of his career—a full-throttle tribute to the Prince of Darkness himself, Ozzy Osbourne, with a roaring rendition of the 1980 classic “Mr. Crowley.”
The event, titled “Back to the Beginning,” was more than a concert. Held as the final show in a series honoring Ozzy’s legendary career, it was part farewell, part celebration, and all heart. And for one night only, Jack Black—actor, frontman of Tenacious D, and longtime metalhead—transformed into a vessel for Osbourne’s dark theatrical magic.
Black emerged on stage draped in a long black coat, eyeliner smeared, arms raised to the heavens—paying uncanny visual homage to Ozzy’s early Blizzard of Ozz era. The lights dimmed, the church-organ intro hit, and with a crack of thunder, the haunting notes of “Mr. Crowley” rang out.
But what stunned the crowd wasn’t just the spectacle—it was the voice. Channeling the raw, operatic spirit of Ozzy, Black hit every eerie wail and soaring chorus with chilling intensity. Between blistering guitar solos and theatrical flourishes, Jack threw himself into the role—equal parts reverent and possessed.
“Ozzy’s the reason I ever picked up a mic,” Black shouted mid-performance. “Tonight, we raise the horns for the Madman!”
While the music electrified the night, the true power of the show came from its mission. All profits from “Back to the Beginning” were pledged to three meaningful causes close to Ozzy and his hometown of Birmingham:
-
Cure Parkinson’s, funding groundbreaking research for the disease Ozzy has bravely battled
-
Birmingham Children’s Hospital, a beacon of hope in the city that raised him
-
Acorn Children’s Hospice, supporting life-limited children and their families with dignity and care
With every note of “Mr. Crowley,” Jack Black wasn’t just singing—he was giving back.
The audience, a mix of die-hard metal fans, families, and longtime admirers, rose to their feet by the final chorus. Lighters and phone lights filled the air. The spirit of Ozzy—the showman, the survivor, the legend—was everywhere.
And when the song ended, Jack Black bowed deeply to a giant portrait of Ozzy projected behind him.
“This one’s for you, brother,” he whispered into the mic.
