For nearly two decades, fans of Constantine have been waiting, hoping, and speculating about a sequel to the cult-favorite 2005 supernatural thriller. Now, Keanu Reeves has finally confirmed that the long-awaited follow-up is officially moving forward, with the script already in development and the green light from DC Studios.
Reeves, who portrayed the chain-smoking, demon-hunting exorcist John Constantine, revealed that bringing the sequel to life has been a passion project for both him and director Francis Lawrence. “We’ve been trying to make this film for over a decade,” Reeves shared in a recent interview with Inverse. “We just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios, and they said, ‘OK.’ So, we’re going to try and write a script.”
A Darker, More Tortured Constantine
While details about the plot remain under wraps, Reeves hinted that the sequel will stay true to the world of the original film—but with even more intensity. “John Constantine’s going to be tortured even more,” he teased, suggesting that the already battle-weary demonologist will be facing even greater horrors.
Francis Lawrence, who directed the first Constantine, echoed Reeves’ excitement, telling Collider that the project is “closer than ever.” He explained that the team has spent years revisiting the comics and refining their vision. “There are probably grains of inspiration from different stories,” he said, “but most of it is just coming from the three of us—loving the character, loving the world, and having it percolate in our minds for 20 years.”
Embracing an R-Rated Constantine
One of the biggest changes this time around? They’re not holding back. Lawrence revealed that when discussions about a sequel resurfaced in 2020, they decided to fully embrace the darker nature of Constantine’s world. “We were like, ‘F** it. Let’s go and do a sequel and really make an R-rated movie,’”* he admitted.
For fans of the original film—who have spent years championing its unique take on the DC Comics antihero—this announcement is nothing short of thrilling. With Reeves and Lawrence back at the helm and a promise to push the boundaries even further, Constantine 2 is shaping up to be one hell of a ride.
