Louisiana’s John Foster shocks American Idol judges with a classic country voice that sounds just like a young Dwight Yoakam

John Foster, a young country singer from Addis, Louisiana, made everyone stop and listen during American Idol 2025’s Hollywood Week Showstoppers round. He sang a song called “In Color” by Jamey Johnson, and it was so touching that it felt like magic.

John is a college student studying biology because he wants to be a doctor who helps people with cancer. He even dreams of being a “singing doctor” one day! But when he stepped on the stage, it was clear he’s already a star. His voice was strong, honest, and full of feeling, like he was telling a story with every word.

When John started singing, it was like he brought the whole room into his world. His voice reminded people of classic country singers like Dwight Yoakam or Randy Travis. The judges—Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie—loved it. They smiled, nodded, and looked amazed by how real and simple his performance was. Luke even said he “painted a picture” with his singing, and Carrie shouted, “I love him!”

John didn’t just sing the words—he made everyone feel them. It was one of those moments where you could tell he meant every note. People watching at home went wild online, saying it was one of the best performances of the whole season.

That night, four singers—Canaan James Hill, Gabby Samone, Mattie Pruitt, and Zaylie Windsor—got a spot in the Top 24 right away. Later, after another round called Head to Head, John and 19 others joined them. The Top 24 includes some special singers, like Canaan, Filo, and Kolbi Jordan, who won Platinum Tickets, and others like Thunderstorm Artis and Drew Ryn, who’ve been on shows like The Voice and X Factor. Even Baylee Littrell, whose dad is in the Backstreet Boys, made it, but Carrie told him he needs to try harder next time.

The Top 24 got exciting news—they’re going to Disney’s Aulani Resort in Hawaii to perform! This is something American Idol does every year, and the singers were so happy they cheered. You can watch their performances on TV on April 13 and 14.

John Foster’s song “In Color” showed everyone his big heart and amazing talent. Who’s your favorite singer this season? Let us know what you think!
