Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton lead tributes to ‘father of British blues’ John Mayall after his death aged 90 – as Clapton thanks the musician for rescuing him from ‘oblivion’

John Mayall, a very special musician known as the “father of British blues,” passed away at his home in California on July 22, 2024. He was 90 years old and was with his loving family. Famous musicians like Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton shared kind words about how much John meant to them and to music.

John led a band called the Bluesbreakers, which helped many young musicians become stars, like Eric Clapton and Mick Fleetwood. Eric Clapton shared a video saying thank you to John for helping him when he was young and felt lost. John taught him how to play the music he loved and gave him confidence. Mick Jagger said John helped his band, the Rolling Stones, by suggesting a great guitarist, Mick Taylor, who made their music even better.

John was born in England and loved blues music from a young age, listening to his dad’s records. He played the piano, guitar, and harmonica, and sang in a unique way. His band started in the 1960s, and he worked with many talented people, like Peter Green and John McVie, who later formed other famous bands.

Even though John never became as famous as some of his band members, he kept playing music until he was very old. He stopped touring in 2021 because he wasn’t feeling well, but his music touched so many hearts. In 2024, he was honored by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for his amazing work.

John’s family shared that he lived a long life filled with music and love. He left behind six children, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. His music will keep inspiring people forever.
