Rapper Tory Lanez, real name Daystar Peterson, has been stabbed by another inmate at the California Correctional Institution, according to recent reports. Lanez is currently two years into a ten-year sentence, handed to him after shooting fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion at a party back in 2020.
The exact motive and severity of the stabbing are, at the time of writing, unknown. Reports suggest that Lanez was stabbed while out in the prison yard and has subsequently been transferred to a nearby civilian hospital in Bakersfield, California. His current condition has not been disclosed, and the identity of the attacker has not yet been determined.
News of the stabbing was first reported on by TMZ, who affirmed that the stabbing has been confirmed by multiple sources, including somebody in law enforcement. In recent weeks, the rapper has been sharing images and social media posts from behind bars, including posts teasing another album release in the near future.
Lanez was handed a ten-year sentence back in 2023, on counts of assault with a semiautomatic handgun, having a loaded and unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and gross negligence in discharging his firearm, following the shooting of Megan Thee Stallion in 2020.
Both rappers had attended a party in Los Angeles on July 12, 2020, which culminated in a heated argument between Stallion and Lanez. This led Lanez to shoot Stallion in the foot, while alledgely telling her to “Dance, bitch”. Both artists have since referenced the incident multiple times, most notably in Stallion’s 2020 track ‘Shots Fired’.
In October 2020, after Lanez had been formally charged for the incident, Stallion wrote an article for The New York Times, in which she shared, “Black women are still constantly disrespected and disregarded in so many areas of life. I was recently the victim of an act of violence by a man. After a party, I was shot twice as I walked away from him. We were not in a relationship.”
A jury found Lanez guilty of all three counts pertaining to the shooting following a trial in 2022. He was then sentenced the following year. However, Lanez has continued to record and release music throughout his incarceration. His latest record, Peterson, for instance, was released in March this year and was recorded entirely behind bars.
