Kendrick Lamar Celebrates Rap Music During Grand National Tour

Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick Lamar capped off a historic two night salvo at New York’s MetLife Stadium by celebrating rap music.

Before launching into his hit 2012 collaboration with Jay Rock, “Money Trees”, Kendrick appeared to take a moment to take in the fact that a Hip Hop tour had sold out a stadium two nights in a row at New York.

Lamar said to the crowd: “I said please believe this is no pop shit. This some rap shit tonight.”

Kendrick and SZA‘s tour has so far been an enormous financial success with the duo playing to sold out stadiums every night.

Earlier in the tour, Kendrick earned the honor of putting on the highest grossing concert by a Black male as headlining or co-headlining artist in history.

The feat occurred at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on April 26, where his Grand National Tour brought in a whopping $11.822 million in a single night.

The record was previously held by The Weeknd, who grossed $9.8 million at his 2022 concert at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

Kendrick has been breaking records left and right over the last year. When the Grand National tour began in Minneapolis last month, it saw Kendrick break Eminem‘s previous record of highest-grossing rap concert.

According to Touring Data, the opening night in Minneapolis grossed over $9.1 million from more than 47,000 fans at an average price of $192.70.

This means that Kendrick can now boast that he has the single highest grossing Hip Hop concert of all time, surpassing Eminem’s record from when he played in Melbourne, Australia back in 2019.

It is also the first ever rap concert to break the $9 million barrier.

Kendrick and SZA also equaled a longstanding chart record thanks to “Luther” which has now been number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for 11 weeks and counting.

“Luther” is now tied with Diddy and Faith Evans’ Biggie tribute “I’ll Be Missing You” for the most weeks spent at No. 1 among duets by co-billed lead solo men and women.

Both K. Dot and SZA’s albums – GNX and SOS respectively – are still also inside the Billboard 200’s top five as the tour keeps fans engaged with the albums.
