Before “Lose Yourself” became an Oscar-winning anthem, it was just a rough, late-night recording inside a movie set trailer. Mekhi Phifer, who co-starred with Eminem in 8 Mile, recently shared a behind-the-scenes story with Daily Express US, revealing that he was one of the first people to ever hear the song.

The 3 AM Studio Session That Made History

Phifer recalled how, in between filming at 2 or 3 AM, Eminem invited him into his trailer to share a brand-new song:

“Yo, come check out this new song I wrote, and I put your name in it.”

Even in its raw, unpolished form, Phifer knew they were witnessing something extraordinary.

“It was incredible. We all went crazy. Who knew this song would go on to win an Oscar?”

Eminem’s On-Set Studio Setup

During the filming of 8 Mile, Eminem had three trailers on set—one for himself, one for a gym, and one transformed into a makeshift recording studio. That night, Phifer heard “Lose Yourself” before even Paul Rosenberg, Eminem’s longtime manager.

A Song That Defined a Generation

Released in 2002, Lose Yourself became one of the greatest hip-hop tracks of all time, winning Best Original Song at the Academy Awards. While the world remembers it as a chart-topping anthem, Mekhi Phifer will always remember that 3 AM moment in a Detroit trailer, witnessing the birth of a song that would change music history forever.
