Riley Green’s rise from country music hitmaker to primetime television coach didn’t happen through years of negotiations or a carefully planned audition. Instead, the path that led him to one of the most coveted seats on television came together in a way few fans saw coming.

As anticipation builds for Season 30 of The Voice, Green is opening up about the surprisingly simple moments that helped secure his spot alongside an all-star coaching panel. And according to the country star, it all started with a few unexpected opportunities that left a lasting impression.

This fall, The Voice will welcome an exciting mix of returning favorites and fresh faces. Veteran coaches Adam Levine and Kelly Clarkson are set to return, while actress, rapper, and producer Queen Latifah joins the competition for the first time. Green will also make his debut, bringing country music back to the iconic red chairs.

Country artists have long played a major role in the show’s success. Fans consistently gravitate toward country coaches, and the track record speaks for itself. Blake Shelton became a cornerstone of the series during his remarkable 23-season run, collecting nine championship victories along the way. More recently, Reba McEntire added her own winning chapter by guiding Asher HaVon to a Season 25 title.

With that legacy in mind, many viewers wondered how Green emerged as the next country representative on the panel.

The answer, it turns out, wasn’t what most people expected.

During a recent appearance on Country Countdown USA, Green shared the behind-the-scenes story of how the opportunity unfolded. While there had been discussions suggesting he could be considered for the role, he said one particular appearance helped set everything in motion.

While performing at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, Green participated in a question-and-answer session before taking the stage. The conversation flowed naturally, and his ability to connect with people reportedly caught the attention of decision-makers.

“There were mentions that there was interest that I might be a possible candidate,” Green explained. Reflecting on the event, he credited the chemistry and easygoing interaction during the Q&A as a major factor in earning the position.

But that wasn’t the only moment that worked in his favor.

Green revealed that producers also took notice of a memorable appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. During the interview, he unexpectedly found himself teaching Fallon how to perform a duck call—a lighthearted segment that showcased his personality and sense of humor.

According to Green, those two appearances ended up making a bigger impact than he ever imagined.

The production team was reportedly searching for someone who could bring the same approachable charm and relatable personality that made Blake Shelton such a fan favorite for years. Green’s combination of authenticity, humor, and country roots apparently checked all the right boxes.

Even though filming for the upcoming season has yet to begin, Green has already started building relationships with his fellow coaches.

One of his first welcome messages came from Kelly Clarkson, who surprised him with a voicemail after the casting announcement. While the gesture was friendly, Clarkson also made it clear she has no intention of giving up her competitive edge and plans to fight hard for another victory.

Green has also spent time getting acquainted with Queen Latifah ahead of the new season. The two recently crossed paths before she hosted the American Music Awards, and the encounter quickly turned into a memorable one.

Latifah’s reaction to meeting the country singer made it obvious she was already familiar with his music. When asked about their introduction, she playfully broke into a few lyrics from the classic hit “Whatta Man,” leaving Green with little doubt that he had already made a fan.

As The Voice prepares for its milestone 30th season, Green’s addition brings a fresh country perspective to the coaching lineup. And if his journey to the red chair is any indication, sometimes the biggest career opportunities don’t arrive through elaborate plans—they begin with a conversation, a laugh, and one unexpected phone call.
