In an interview with People published on August 21, Parton said she had been experiencing “some health issues” that she had previously neglected while looking after Dean, who died in March 2025 at the age of 82.

The country music icon made the admission after canceling an appearance at Dollywood. Her health had forced her to step back from several public commitments, although she remained determined to continue working on the projects that mattered most to her.

Parton acknowledged that this was not the first serious health challenge she had faced. She recalled experiencing significant health problems in the early 1980s and said she understood what it meant to go through difficult periods physically.

Despite everything, the singer remained remarkably optimistic about her future.

Parton said she was “still healin’” but continued working because she still had many things she wanted to accomplish. She also explained that she no longer expected to tour in the same way she once had, although she hoped to perform special shows in the future.

One of the ideas she was exploring was the use of avatar technology, which could allow her to perform without the physical demands of traditional touring.

Her comments now carry an especially poignant meaning following her death on August 25 at age 80.

Parton’s representatives said she died peacefully in Nashville. Her death followed what her team described as a brief battle with cancer, although the specific type was not disclosed.

In the days leading up to her death, Parton had continued to discuss her ambitions and projects rather than presenting herself as someone ready to step away completely.

That determination had been a defining feature of her career. Even while dealing with personal loss and health difficulties, she remained involved with plans for her music, businesses and a new museum in Nashville.

Her final interview therefore offers a bittersweet glimpse into her mindset during her last days: she acknowledged that her health had become difficult, but she was still looking ahead and hoping to accomplish more.
