Michael Bublé had the audience laughing when he turned one of his concerts into an unexpected musical challenge involving fellow singer Josh Groban.
The two artists have spent more than two decades at the top of the music world, but their musical identities are distinctly different. Bublé is closely associated with jazz and classic standards, while Groban is known for his powerful, classically influenced vocals.
That contrast made their surprise onstage showdown all the more entertaining.
Bublé challenges Groban
Known for his humor as much as his showmanship, Bublé began by joking about making a dramatic change to his musical direction.
He teased the audience by saying he did not even like jazz, then compared the genre to a blues band falling down the stairs.
But his real target quickly became clear.
Bublé announced that he was going to start his new musical journey by “kicking Josh Groban’s little butt.”
With the challenge officially issued, he asked his band to play a song he considered suitable for Groban.
What followed was a playful rendition of “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor, performed in an exaggerated style reminiscent of Groban.
The crowd immediately erupted.
Groban makes a surprise appearance
The performance became even more entertaining when Groban himself appeared behind Bublé onstage.
Standing at the back of the stage, Groban watched as Bublé continued with the joke. His reactions drew plenty of laughter from the audience, while Bublé carried on as though he already knew his musical rival was there.
Soon, Groban joined him onstage and the two singers shared a hug, making it clear that the apparent rivalry was all part of the fun.
Then they decided to take the challenge a step further: each singer would perform one of the other’s signature songs.
Bublé takes on “You Raise Me Up”
Bublé chose Groban’s well-known hit “You Raise Me Up.”
Rather than simply performing the song in his own style, he leaned into the challenge and attempted to capture Groban’s more operatic vocal approach.
Groban stayed nearby, offering advice and helping Bublé work his voice toward the higher, more dramatic range associated with the song.
The result was another playful moment between two singers clearly enjoying the opportunity to swap musical identities.
Groban tackles “Fly Me to the Moon”
Then it was Groban’s turn.
He took on Bublé’s classic “Fly Me to the Moon”, paying tribute to the singer not only through the vocals but also through his stage mannerisms.
Groban added finger snaps and hip movements that echoed Bublé’s performance style, sending the crowd into another round of cheers and laughter.
Neither singer was taking the challenge too seriously, but both delivered impressive performances while showing their ability to step outside their usual styles.
By the end of the musical exchange, Bublé and Groban had traded songs, jokes and plenty of affection onstage.
The playful sing-off offered fans a rare chance to see two very different vocalists put their own spin on each other’s music — and have a great deal of fun doing it.
