That was the feeling inside Nissan Stadium during Night Two of CMA Fest when Keith Urban surprised thousands of fans by bringing music legend Michael McDonald to the stage for an emotional performance of their new collaboration, “We Go Back.”
The unexpected appearance instantly transformed an already electric evening into one of the festival’s most memorable moments.
As Urban’s set unfolded, fans had no idea a surprise guest was waiting in the wings. Then, to a roar of applause, McDonald emerged from backstage, joining the country superstar for a live rendition of the song that has quickly become one of the most anticipated tracks from Urban’s upcoming album, Flow State.
The reaction was immediate.
Cheers echoed throughout the stadium as the two artists traded vocals on the nostalgic, soul-infused track. The forthcoming album embraces a smooth, feel-good sound often associated with yacht rock, a genre Urban says offers something many listeners are searching for right now.
“It’s inclusive. It’s a big exhale. It brings everybody together,” he explained. “We need that right now.”
The project also features an impressive lineup of collaborators, including John Mayer, Michael McDonald, and Little Big Town. According to Urban, each collaboration happened naturally, with the songs themselves guiding the creative process.
For “We Go Back,” there was never another choice in his mind.
“Michael was it for that song,” Urban explained.

Earlier in the evening, Jo Dee Messina welcomed Lauren Daigle to the stage for a special performance of “Who Else.” Later, headliner Cody Johnson joined forces with Brothers Osborne for their collaboration, “Fool Proof.”
The night’s lineup also featured performances from Blake Shelton, Shaboozey, Maggie Antone, and The Red Clay Strays.
Meanwhile, The Band Perry delighted longtime fans with a performance of their signature hit “If I Die Young” alongside newer material from their evolving catalog.
Urban wasn’t finished creating memorable moments, either.
Toward the end of his set, he spotted a fan from Alabama in the audience and spontaneously launched into a crowd-pleasing rendition of “Sweet Home Alabama.” The impromptu performance added another layer of excitement to an already unforgettable night.
As midnight approached, Cody Johnson brought the evening to a close, thanking the thousands of fans who stayed late before delivering a powerful performance of “‘Til You Can’t.”
Yet for many attendees, the image they’ll remember most is Keith Urban standing beside Michael McDonald beneath the stadium lights, sharing a song built on reflection, friendship, and the enduring power of music.
