In a delightful mid-air surprise, Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi treated British Airways passengers to an impromptu performance during a flight from London Heathrow to Los Angeles on March 28, 2023. As the Boeing 777 cruised at 35,000 feet over the Atlantic, Capaldi emerged with a drinks trolley, serving beverages and engaging with passengers. He then serenaded the cabin with an acoustic rendition of his unreleased track “Wish You the Best,” a heartfelt ballad from his upcoming album Broken By Desire to Be Heavenly Sent, set for release on May 19.
Among the surprised passengers were four superfans, including sisters Rowan and Georgie Gupwell from Glasgow, who had been specially invited aboard without knowledge of the planned performance. Their astonishment was shared by British Airways employee Nicola Barker, who described the experience as a “pinch-me” moment, noting that Capaldi not only performed but also served her a gin and tonic.
Capaldi concluded his performance with characteristic humor, jesting, “I’m sorry to disturb your flight, if anyone is not aware, my name is Ed Sheeran,” eliciting laughter and applause from the cabin. This unique in-flight concert not only showcased Capaldi’s musical talents but also highlighted his personable charm, leaving passengers with an unforgettable experience at cruising altitude.
