Phil Collins is a famous musician who has done many cool things in his career. He started as a drummer in a band called Genesis, acted as the Artful Dodger in a play called Oliver!, and even did voices for Disney movies. With all these different experiences, it’s no surprise that he likes all kinds of music. He shared his favorite songs with Apple Music when he was talking about his album called Going Back, and his list has a little bit of everything—Motown, rock, and even songs from musicals!
When Phil was younger, he used to go to a place in London called the Marquee Club almost every week to watch a Motown band called The Action. He loved their song “I’ll Keep Holding On” so much that it’s still one of his favorites today. Since he’s a rock star, it makes sense that he also picked a song by Led Zeppelin called “When the Levee Breaks.” He thinks the drumming in that song, done by John Bonham, is one of the best ever. Phil said he even stood up and clapped for John the first time he heard him play!
Phil also surprised some people by choosing a song from the musical Wicked called “I’m Not That Girl.” This pick might remind him of his days acting in plays. He called it “staggering,” which means he thinks it’s really amazing. His list has a lot of Motown songs too, like “Going to a Go-Go” by The Miracles and “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” by The Temptations. These songs are from his Going Back album, where he sang his own versions of them.
Another song he loves is “I Can’t Make You Love Me” by Bonnie Raitt. He says it’s one of the best love songs he’s ever heard. From rock to musicals to Motown, Phil’s favorite songs show how much he enjoys all kinds of music.
