The Voice’s Joe Henley Was Planning to Study Abroad — Then One Unexpected Google Search Changed Everything

Joe Henley was preparing for a future that had very little to do with country music. At just 19, the Alabama teenager was focused on finishing high school, playing basketball, and potentially moving overseas to continue his athletic development. Then a random Google search introduced him to an opportunity that would completely change his plans — and eventually put him in front of millions of television viewers.

Today, Henley is one of the young country singers competing on The Voice Season 30, representing Team Riley Green. But his journey to the NBC competition is particularly unusual because he had never performed on a stage before receiving his audition opportunity. What started with a simple video submission became an experience that took him across the country, introduced him to some of country music’s biggest personalities, and gave him a reason to reconsider everything he thought his future would look like.

Henley grew up in Grand Bay, Alabama, a quiet coastal community that he describes as a place surrounded by woods without much happening. He loves his hometown, but his family background meant he was familiar with traveling and experiencing life beyond his immediate surroundings.

His father, Bob Henley, is a former Major League Baseball player who now works as the third-base coach for the San Diego Padres. Growing up around professional baseball gave Joe opportunities to travel with his family, although basketball was the sport that captured most of his own attention.

As he approached graduation from Cottage Hill Christian Academy, his plans were becoming increasingly focused on basketball. He had been exploring opportunities to continue playing overseas, particularly at universities in England and Madrid, Spain.

Music was not necessarily part of the future he had imagined.

That changed during the fall of 2025, when Henley stumbled across an audition announcement for The Voice. What makes the discovery particularly amusing is that he did not find the opportunity through Instagram, TikTok, or another social media platform.

Instead, he found it through Google.

Henley later explained that he was searching online when he came across the show’s official website, which advertised a virtual open call. Interested in seeing what might happen, he decided to submit a video of himself singing.

There was just one problem: he did not have a long list of prepared audition songs.

For his first submission, Henley chose “Chiseled in Stone,” the 1988 country hit recorded by Vern Gosdin. It was one of the few songs he already felt comfortable performing, so he decided to go with it.

That simple decision opened the door to a much bigger process. Producers requested additional recordings, arranged Zoom interviews, and eventually invited him to Los Angeles.

For someone who had never performed professionally, the experience was already becoming difficult to comprehend.

Traveling alone to Los Angeles was another major adjustment. Although Henley had traveled with his family throughout his father’s baseball career, flying by himself was something entirely different.

He admitted that he was nervous about the experience, particularly because he had never taken a solo flight before. Fortunately, the welcoming atmosphere surrounding the production helped him become more comfortable.

Then came another phone call.

In February, producers contacted Henley again and invited him to return to Los Angeles during the summer for the recorded Blind Auditions. This time, the opportunity required a much bigger conversation with his family.

He had been preparing to pursue basketball overseas, but suddenly there was a possibility that music could take him in a completely different direction.

Riley Green Joined Joe Henley for Impromptu Duet on The Voice

Henley explained that he had been seriously considering universities in England and Madrid. However, the challenges of finding college basketball opportunities in the United States, combined with the uncertainty surrounding his next steps, made taking a gap year worth considering.

After discussing everything as a family, they decided to give The Voice a chance.

It was a decision that would eventually lead him to perform in front of one of his favorite country artists.

When Henley finally stepped onto the Blind Audition stage, he chose “Anymore,” the emotional Travis Tritt country song. Despite having almost no previous stage experience, he managed to deliver a performance that convinced both Riley Green and Kelly Clarkson to turn their chairs.

For Henley, however, seeing Riley turn around was particularly meaningful.

The young singer was already familiar with Green’s music and was excited about the possibility of working with him. Before the performance, he expected his nerves to become overwhelming. He even worried about whether he would manage to get through the opening notes without his voice cracking.

Surprisingly, he initially felt calmer than expected.

That changed when he opened his eyes and saw the coaches facing him. Suddenly, the reality of performing in front of such an important panel hit him, and his heart began racing.

The moment became even more memorable when Green jumped up and joined him for an impromptu duet.

Henley later joked that he had just managed to finish the entire song without his voice cracking, only to discover that he had to sing it again alongside the country star.

Despite the unexpected pressure, everything worked out. When it came time to choose a coach, Henley selected Green, beginning a partnership that would become an important part of his competition journey.

However, his next challenge was considerably more intimidating.

During the Battles, Henley faced Kenna Elpers, a contestant with considerably more performance experience. They performed “Don’t Mind If I Do,” the duet recorded by Riley Green and Ella Langley.

Green brought in country singer Carly Pearce to help the contestants prepare, and Henley admitted that the rehearsals made him more nervous than anything he had experienced up to that point.

But instead of treating the preparation as a competition between two singers, Elpers helped him understand the performance and improve throughout the process.

Green ultimately selected Henley to advance, but the teenager struggled to celebrate the victory.

He believed Elpers was an exceptionally talented singer and felt that her experience had helped him deliver a better performance. Rather than taking all the credit, he repeatedly acknowledged how much he had learned from his Battle partner.

Henley described her as gracious and generous, explaining that she taught him a great deal and helped him throughout their preparation.

That reaction offers an interesting glimpse into his personality. In a competition where every contestant wants to survive, Henley appeared genuinely concerned about the artist who had just been eliminated.

And that may be one of the most memorable parts of his journey so far.

Now, as Season 30 approaches its Live Shows, Henley is facing another important challenge. Riley Green must decide which members of his team will advance automatically during Cut Week, while the remaining artists compete for additional places.

But Henley has already made it clear that he is not treating the experience as something that can only be measured by winning.

He admitted that the entire production has been so extraordinary that he still struggles to imagine what returning to ordinary life will feel like. Having started with no stage experience, he has suddenly found himself performing in front of established musicians and receiving opportunities he never expected.

He also has a personal reason for wanting to make the most of the experience. Henley has spoken openly about his Christian faith, explaining that he hopes his performances reflect his desire to glorify the Lord rather than simply draw attention to himself.

That perspective helps explain why he considers his participation in the competition meaningful regardless of the final result.

In fact, his own assessment of the experience may be the most telling part of his story. Henley believes he has already won simply by getting the opportunity to be part of The Voice.

And when you consider how unexpectedly everything began, it is difficult not to appreciate just how far he has come.

A teenager who was preparing to play basketball overseas submitted a country song after finding an audition announcement on Google. Months later, he was standing on a nationally televised stage, singing alongside an artist whose music he already admired.

Whether Henley eventually becomes the Season 30 champion or returns to Alabama with an entirely different future in mind, his journey has already taken an unexpected turn.

But there is still one question worth asking: Could the teenager who had never performed on stage before joining The Voice become one of the season’s biggest surprises?
