Willie Nelson has been making music for almost 70 years, and over that time, he’s made lots of friends in all kinds of music styles. In 2004, he put on a big TV show and made a live album called Willie Nelson & Friends: Outlaws & Angels. It happened at a place called The Wiltern in Los Angeles, and he sang with famous people like Merle Haggard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Keith Richards, Toots Hibbert, and more.
During the show, Willie teamed up with these music stars to sing different songs. Sometimes, it was just him and one other singer, like a duet. Other times, he shared the stage with a bunch of legends at once. For example, Merle Haggard, Keith Richards, and Jerry Lee Lewis all joined him to sing an old song called “Trouble in Mind.” It’s a fun blues song, and they made it extra special together.
Sadly, this cool performance isn’t on the album Willie made after the concert, but you can see it on the TV special or the DVD. In the video, Jerry Lee Lewis plays the piano and sings with Willie and Merle. Keith Richards, Willie, and Merle all play guitars. Together, they mix blues, country, and rock and roll into one awesome sound.
Most of the night, Willie sang his own songs or big country hits with his friends, like “Mama Tried,” “Pancho & Lefty,” and “On the Road Again.” But for “Trouble in Mind,” Willie, Merle, Jerry Lee, and Keith picked a really old song from America’s music past. A jazz piano player named Richard M. Jones wrote it, and a singer named Thelma La Vizzo sang it first way back in 1924. Since then, tons of people have sung it, like Chippie Hill with Louis Armstrong, Georgia White, Dinah Washington, and Lightnin’ Hopkins. Country fans might know it from Willie, Merle, George Jones, or Bob Wills too.
This show was all about Willie and his friends having fun, mixing their talents, and making music that kids and grown-ups can love!
