Bruce Springsteen shared encouraging news regarding his wife and E Street Bandmate Patti Scialfa, revealing that she is now in remission from cancer. The Boss delivered the update during a pre-recorded video message for the Pan-Mass Challenge, an annual bike ride that raises funds for cancer research and treatment at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
A Long-Awaited Connection to the Pan-Mass Challenge
Billy Starr, the founder and chairman of the Pan-Mass Challenge, originally invited Springsteen to participate in the ride in 1984. Springsteen joked in his virtual address that it took 42 years, but he finally made it. He praised the community for raising funds and for believing that ordinary people can make an extraordinary difference.
Springsteen has a deep personal connection to the cause. He shared with viewers that Scialfa has been treated at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute for multiple myeloma. She has been living with the illness for over eight years, but Springsteen confirmed that she is now thankfully in remission.
Reflecting on Hope and Medical Research
Speaking about their family’s journey, Springsteen reflected on the face of hope found in healthcare workers. He thanked the physicians who refuse to stop searching and caring, as well as the nurses who sit beside patients when they are scared.
The experience has fundamentally shaped his perspective on medical research. Springsteen stated that medical research is neither an idea, politics, nor a line in a budget, but rather the reason families find hope when it is hardest to find. He noted that his entire career has been spent writing songs about people who keep believing when life gives them every reason not to.
A Look Back at the Diagnosis
Scialfa first went public with her diagnosis in the 2024 documentary Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. She explained that she was diagnosed with blood cancer in 2018, which led her to step back significantly from touring. Because the condition affects her immune system, she has had to exercise caution regarding her schedule and performances.
To close out his virtual appearance, Springsteen dedicated one of his best riding songs to the participants before treating viewers to an acoustic rendition of “Born to Run.”
When AC/DC’s Brian Johnson Played Football With Chuck Norris
Picture the scene: it is 1983, and AC/DC vocalist Brian Johnson is standing under the floodlights at Florence’s Stadio Comunale in front of 25,000 screaming fans. Only, he is not holding a microphone on a rock stage—he is playing in a charity football match for a United States celebrity all-star team against an Italian show business XI.
Recalling the surreal experience during a vintage interview with Tyne Tees Television, Johnson revealed that the US squad had a secret weapon on the pitch: martial arts icon Chuck Norris.
“There was about 25,000 there,” Johnson remembered. “It was floodlit and yer knees turned to jelly. It was against the Italian showbiz XI and they were unbeaten; they thought we were gonna be a walk-over, but they didn’t know we had Chuck Norris. He was centre-half and you didn’t go near the man – he was dangerous!”
A Red Card and a Man of the Match Trophy
Despite Norris ultimately earning a red card, Team USA managed to pull off a 1-0 victory against the previously undefeated Italian side. To top off the bizarre afternoon, legendary Italian goalkeeper Dino Zoff presented Johnson with the Man of the Match award.
“It was a fantastic night,” Johnson said. “Music’s me love and football’s me passion, you know what I mean? They’re two different things.”
During the same 1983 interview, the Dunston-born singer also discussed his deep roots in the North East of England and shared ambitions to financially invest £100,000 into Newcastle United following their signing of Kevin Keegan. While that particular financial backing never materialized, Johnson’s lifelong fandom remains intact, punctuated by a cameo in the 2005 film Goal! The Dream Begins and a voiceover for a Newcastle United hype video in 2025.
